NEW ORLEANS HONORED FOR JOB GROWTH AND BUSINESS INVESTMENT
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    July 15, 2009

NEW ORLEANS HONORED FOR JOB GROWTH AND BUSINESS INVESTMENT

New Orleans has been named Major Market of the Year in the Top Deals & Hot Markets report developed by Southern Business and Development.

The designation is based on job growth and business investment in the area. The report identifies three notable economic development accomplishments in New Orleans and the metropolitan area that will generate more than 1,300 jobs and investments of almost $540 million.

"This designation is further acknowledgement of the success of our continuing recovery," said Mayor C. Ray Nagin. "Economists anticipate that our economy will boom for the next seven to 10 years and national and regional publications are taking notice of our city."

According to Southern Business and Development, "New Orleans continues its amazing economic development renewal with its first ever "Major Market of the Year." The Big Easy has flirted with this award since 2007 when it was cited for its first "Honorable Mention." It also earned an "Honorable Mention" last year, so that's three consecutive years of New Orleans placing in the top 3 in the major market division. No city deserves it more than New Orleans after what it went through with Katrina in 2005."

The report notes that the Federal City project will generate 748 jobs and investment of $110 million. In addition, expansion projects will generate 355 jobs and $398 million in investments at Mansanto in Luling and 230 jobs and an investment of $40 million at Southern Recycle.

STATEMENT FROM MAYOR C. RAY NAGIN
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
    March 30, 2009

I am very pleased by Secretary Napolitano’s proposal to forgive the Community Disaster Loans for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Having been immediately downgraded to junk bond status and barley escaping bankruptcy after the storms, this is an important first step for the City of New Orleans. Since 2006, my Administration and City Council have had discussions during the budget process about what steps we could or could not take pending the forgiveness of the CDL loans, and as a result, we have had to manage our city’s operating budget very carefully not to overspend, all the while, trying to maintain an improved level of service for our citizens. While I know that the CDL forgiveness is a process and will not happen “overnight”, it is a comfort that we are on the path to a resolution of this very important issue. Again, I commend Secretary Napolitano and the Administration on their expediency and willingness to make the Gulf Coast thrive again.

    C. Ray Nagin, Mayor
